Are You the Destination or a Stop Along the Way?

Ask any dog lover their favorite breed and you’ll receive an impassioned response and their supporting argument.  For me, a Rhodesian Ridgeback stole my heart a couple years ago.  I was unable to keep him because he was aggressive to larger male dogs at the dog park, so he now lives at the lake with a teenage boy as his constant companion.
This past August I began searching for another Ridgeback hoping for a better fit as an apartment dweller who frequents Loch Haven Dog Park in Hoover, Alabama.  Petfinder.com supplied a few options and I went to a no-kill shelter a couple of counties away and adopted a 45-pound male Rhodesian Ridgeback mix named Red.
I took him into the small dog side of Loch Haven and we had the whole park to ourselves.  Instead of enjoying the large area with ample space to run among the trees and sand to dig in, he immediately ran to the fence intently staring at the larger enclosure.
Red was so scared at the sound of men’s voices, he would cower whenever he heard them.  Unfortunately, I live in an industrial area between two main roads and am surrounded by businesses.  It became clear to me that while I could provide a better environment than he had been accustomed to, I was not his ideal home.
After having taken him to the vet and giving him medication for a minor health issue, I returned him to the shelter.  This was after much prayer and anguish. I was praying for Red to find just the right family who could provide a quiet country environment with lots of love for him. I don’t know who adopted him, but I regularly checked the shelter’s website to find within a short time he was no longer there.  I couldn’t see it in the moment because of the guilt I felt in returning him.  Later, I realized I was merely a stop in Red’s journey to the home God had planned for him all along.
Philippians 1:6
I am sure of this, that He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
